See below for details.
Bike Against Hunger has put on yearly local cycling races to raise both money and food for the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, and we’ve been quite successful in our efforts. In two years, we have raised 1,300 pounds of food and just over a thousand dollars in donations for the food bank.
The 3rd Annual Alleycat Race and Ride will be on November 15, 2009, at Sauced Pizzeria in the Paseo District of Oklahoma City. This year, we are expanding the activities to include a raffle drawing for prizes and a post-ride concert.
The race :
We will feature a 'Cranksgiving' style race. When a racer arrives at the starting line at Sauced Pizzeria, they will receive two lists. One will be a list of supermarkets that they must visit, and the second will be a list of types of food that the food bank needs. When the race starts, each racer will need to find the quickest way to reach each supermarket, where they will need to purchase one of the items on the list. As they leave each supermarket, a volunteer will sign their list to verify that they visited the supermarket. Each racer will need to carry all purchased items with them for the entire race. When they have visited all of the supermarkets, they will return to the starting line.
You will be required to bring your own bag, and you will need to have cash to purchase the food. Locks are not required, as we will have volunteers at each supermarket to watch your bikes.
Male can compete in two divisions : geared/multispeed bicycles or fixed/singlespeed bicycles. Females will have a single division. We also hope to have a seperate division for 'nontraditional' bicycles - if you can ride it safely in the streets, then bring it for the race. Unlike previous years, the prizes will be small, but bragging rights will still be yours.
Geared riders : in every alleycat race ever run in Oklahoma City, a fixed-gear or singlespeed rider has taken first place overall. Your mission will be to deny them their prize.
The ride :
After the race begins, we will host a social ride where we will visit many supermarkets and purchase food for the food bank at each. This will be a 'no-drop' ride - in other words, everyone will travel in the same group, and we will not leave slower riders behind.
This ride is designed for people who rarely get on a bicycle, or who may be skittish about riding on city streets with cars. We will have experienced riders who will ready to help you with whatever you need, and travelling in a large group will ensure the safety of all riders. If you do not have any way to carry the food you purchase, we will have someone to carry it for you.
The ride will be approximately eight miles. This is a distance easily covered by any adult - even if you are severely out-of-shape, you will be surprised at how far you can travel by bicycle! You'll also notice that riding a bicycle allows you to see Oklahoma City in a way that you don't get my speeding around in a closed-up car.
Afterwards :
Both before and after the ride and race, we will be selling raffle tickets for $1. After awarding the prizes to the racers, we will raffle off our remaining prizes - we love fast riders but we want everyone to have a chance to win. All money from the raffle will be donated to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.
Following the raffle, we will have live music in the Sauced Annex. There will be many more hours of sunlight, so feel free to stay, eat pizza and drink beer, and enjoy what the Paseo District has to offer you.
